Information Evening

Lavey GAA Club have organised a health and well-being presentation by Ger Redmond about the effects of addiction in the Community Centre on Friday, January 10 at 7.30pm. All players, coaches and supporters in the club are encouraged to attend.

Children's Liturgy Mass

Information Evening

There was a huge turnout at the health and well-being event organised by Lavey GAA Club on Friday night last in the Community Centre. MC was Club Chairperson Damien Tynan. The various speakers were Jerome Crawford, Club Children's Officer; Conor Martin, Club Health and Well-being Officer; Gerry Soden, County Board Health and Well-being Officer and professional triathlete Ger Redmond whose wide ranging presentation covered the effects of addiction and the importance of having goals and aims in life.

Lavey Ladies AGM

The Annual General Meeting will take place on Saturday, January 18 at 6.30pm in the Community Centre, Lower Lavey.
Past, current and new members are encouraged to attend as the Club prepares for the season ahead.
The Club would like to thank all those who took part, helped out and those who supported the 7th annual Christmas day swim, the proceeds of which went to Lavey Community Playground and Killyconnan Sports Grounds.

CFR are controlled and dispatched by the emergency services directly. Many volunteers are required and full training will be provided in emergency first aid, CPR and the use of a defibrillator.

Well done to Aaron McCabe, Oisin Tynan, Conor Smith, Dean McCabe and the Virginia College U19 team on defeating St. Ciaran's, Ballygawley, Co. Tyrone to win the Ulster Schools title on Wednesday evening last in dramatic circumstances in Kingspan Breffni. The sides were deadlocked after extra time St. Ciaran's 2-13 to Virginia's 4-7. Virginia then came out on top in a penalty shoot out. Congratulations to all involved.
Lavey are in Division 1 of the U17 League. It commences on Saturday, March 7 with Lavey away to Ballyhaise at 2pm.

Hard luck to Aaron McCabe, Oisin Tynan, Conor Smith, Dean McCabe and the Virginia College U19 team on their narrow defeat by 4-9 to 3-10 to St Colmcilles Community School in the All-Ireland semi-final in Abbottstown on Saturday last.
Assan Gaels (Lavey/Killinkere) lost their opening game of the U20 Division 2 league by 2-14 to 2-5 to Trinity Gaels in Jim Smith Park Killinkere on Sunday last. They will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to O'Raghallaigh Park Kingscourt on Saturday, March 14 to play Kingscourt at 4pm.
Lavey are in Division 1 of the U17 League. Following the postponement of round 1, they will commence their campaign against Bailieborough on St. Patrick's Day, March 17 at New Inn at 12pm.
The Lavey Club needs to provide a referee to officiate at games within the county. COVID-19

The lockdown restrictions due to the virus have been extended until May 5. It is hoped there can be a partial unwinding from then on. In the meantime everyone is asked to adhere to all the guidelines and follow approved information. The voluntary efforts of many in the community are appreciated at this time. Remember to ask for help and it will be forthcoming.

Daily Mass

In response to COVID-19 related restrictions on public gatherings, RTE will air Mass every weekday at 10.30am from St. Eunan’s and St. Columba’s Cathedral, Letterkenny, on TRE News Now.
All public Masses, except Funeral Masses, are suspended in the Diocese of Kilmore until further notice. Churches will remain open for people to visit and pray.
Cavan parish are providing a webcam service which will air Mass daily at 10am and 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and at 10am on Sundays. The Rosary will be recited at 4pm each day. Watch or listen here.

We are aware that people may be under financial constraints due to the Coronavirus outbreak but if people would still like to contribute to the upkeep of the church, you can put your envelopes through the letterbox of either parochial house. Thank you for your continued support which is always appreciated.

ALONE has launched a national support line and additional supports for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Deaths

The death occurred on May 2 of Seamus Smith, Gortnakillew and formerly Brackloney, Ballyjamesduff. Sympathy is extended to his wife Marian, sons and daughters Martin, Orladh, Darren and Caitriona and extended family.
The death occurred on May 2 of Rose Fitzsimmons (nee Nulty), Lattagloghan/Drumfomina, Ballyjamesduff. Sympathy is extended to sons and daughters Breda, Tom, Tony and Rosemary; also Brian, Brid and Patrick and extended family.
Sympathy is also extended to Tony on the death of his mother-in-law Bridget (Bridie) Martin (Fitzsimons) (nee Hussey), Clonkeefy, Castlerahan on May 2 also.
The death occurred of Patrick Fay, Fartadreen, Bailieborough and formerly Moher, Lavey on April 26. Sympathy is extended to his son Noel and extended family. Burial took place in St. Dympna’s Upper.

The Club also extends sympathy to Killinkere GFC and the family of Lewis Fay-Cooper on his sad passing.

Sunday last, May 17 was the date in the calendar for the ceremony and prayers at St. Dympna's Well. There is blessed water from the well available for anyone to take home in Lower Lavey church.
Please note that St. Dympna's, Upper and Lower, remain open for people to visit and pray.

COVID-19

The lockdown restrictions have been eased somewhat with phase 1 of the reopening having commenced on May 18. Outdoor construction, garden centres and hardware stores are open from this date. The next phase of the reopening is scheduled for June 8. In the meantime everyone is asked to adhere to all the guidelines and follow approved information. The voluntary efforts of many in the community are appreciated at this time.

Lourdes Mass

Unfortunately this year's Kilmore Diocesan Pilgrimage has had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. To mark the occasion of the pilgrimage a special Mass will be celebrated in the Cathedral, Cavan on Saturday, May 30 at 6.30pm, followed by the rosary. Mass will be celebrated behind closed doors with Monsignor Liam Kelly the main celebrant. Mass can be viewed on Cavan Cathedral

St. Dympna's Well

There is blessed water from St. Dympna's Well available for anyone to take home in Lower Lavey church.
Please note that St. Dympna's, Upper and Lower, remain open for people to visit and pray.

COVID-19

Sincere sympathy is extended to Julie Reilly, Druminbawn, New Inn on the recent death of her brother Patrick Farrelly, Barconey, Ballyjamesduff who died tragically following a farm accident. He is survived by his mother Eileen, siblings Mary, James, Julie, Angela, Evelyn, Olivia, Catherine, Norbert, Oliver, Margaret, Patricia, Antoinette and Phelim. Patrick's funeral took place in St. Mary's Church, Castlerahan.
Sincere sympathy is also extended to Olive Gilcreest, Cuttragh on the death of her father Tommy Charlie Sheridan, Urney, Ballinagh on May 21. The funeral took place to St. Felim's Church, Ballinagh on Saturday last.
The death of Una Smith (nee Soden), Lackenmore, Ballyjamesduff occurred on May 21. The funeral took place to St. Joseph's Church, Ballyjamesduff on Saturday last. Sympathy is extended to her daughters Pauline, Elizabeth and Eileen; sons Tom and John; daughter in law Bernie and extended family.

Leaving Certificate Mass

Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3 by Monsignor Liam Kelly at 6.30pm in the Cathedral, Cavan. It will be celebrated for all Leaving Certificate students, their parents, guardians and teachers of the diocese who were prevented from taking their Leaving Certificate examination on this day.
Fr. Andrew and Fr. Pat will remember all the Leaving Certificate students in the parish in their private daily Masses.

Kilmore Diocesan "Virtual" Pilgrimage to Knock

Will take place on Sunday, June 21. Pilgrims are welcome to join the afternoon of ceremonies from their homes. The schedule will include the praying of the Rosary at 2.30pm, followed by Mass and Benediction at 3pm. In advance of the day, pilgrims may place their petitions online on the Knock Shrine website and these will be placed on the altar for the Mass. Many pilgrims light candles for loved ones and their intentions during their visit to Knock Shrine and this service is also available online. A candle will be lit at the oudoor candelabra for each request received. The pilgrimage will be streamed live on knockshrine.ie and Radio Maria (Saorview TV Channel 210).

National Heritage Week

Takes place from August 15 - 23. The Club's annual Fun Run was on Sunday last and was in memory of Seamus Smith. All donations are in aid of the Respiratory Department in Cavan General Hospital. The Smith family and the Respiratory Department are grateful for this.  Various groupings got together in the parish to complete the 5k throughout the day. Donations can still be made at gofundme

Deaths

Sympathy is extended to his wife Josephine; sons Jimmy, Philip and Laurence; daughters Mary, Ann, Martina and Caroline; brothers Paddy, Oliver, Ned and Jimmy; sisters Ann and Maureen; grandchildren and extended family.
Sympathy is extended to Finola Maguire, Behey on the death of her mother Sheila O'Reilly, Kilcogy on June 12. The funeral took place to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran on Saturday week last.
Sympathy is extended to Margaret Mohan, Lavey on the death of her sister Bridget Giblin (nee Higgins), New Jersey and formerly Cuttragh, who died recently.

Lough Derg

Lakeshore and Ancient Pilgrim Path reopens for visitors. Walk and pray the ancient pilgrim path on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. Guided contemplative walk begins at noon, approximately 4 hours with a 12km moderate loop.

GAA

The Club was saddened to hear of the passing of Lavey and Cavan legend Johnny Cusack on July 10. Johnny's achievements were many - three to highlight here -

  • All Ireland winner with Cavan in 1952
  • Senior championship winner with Lavey in 1951
  • Trainer of the 1975 Lavey junior championship winning team.

His legacy lives on in the Club with his grandsons and granddaughters playing football at senior and minor levels. The Club held a Guard of Honour at the funeral on Sunday last.


The Lavey U17 team will compete in Division 1 of the championship which commences on Saturday, July 18 with Lavey away to Bailieborough at 2pm.
The junior team commence their Division 2 Reserve league campaign on Saturday, July 18 away to Knockbride in St. Bridget's Park at 7.30pm.
The senior team commence their Division 2 league campaign on Sunday, July 19 away to Ramor Utd. in Dolan Park, Virginia at 2.30pm.

The junior team lost to Knockbride by 2-10 to 0-13 in the Division 2 Reserve league on Saturday last. Their next game is against Drumgoon on Saturday, July 25 at New Inn at 6pm.
The senior team play Drumgoon in the Division 2 league on Saturday, July 25 at New Inn at 7.30pm. The following weekend they will play Crosserlough in the first round of the senior championship.

Lough Derg

A new pilgrimage on Lough Derg’s lakeshore. Walk and pray in the Lough Derg tradition on August 16, 18, 22, 26 and 30. At times in the 1600s and 1700s when Station Island was closed by the Penal Laws, pilgrims undertook a form of pilgrimage on the lakeshore. Walk in their footsteps. GAA

The senior team lost to Crosserlough by 1-14 to 0-7 in the first round of the senior championship in Kingspan Breffni on Sunday evening. They will play Gowna in the second round at 5pm on Saturday in Kilnaleck.

The U17 team lost to Southern Gaels (Gowna/Lacken) in round 3 of the championship on Saturday last at New Inn. They play Lough Oughter Gaels in the next round on Tuesday, August 11 in Emmett Park, Butlersbridge at 7.15pm.

The U15 Division 2 team commenced the championship with a win over Killinkere by 3-11 to 2-11. Their next game is away to Ballyhaise Thursday evening August 6 in Annalee Park at 7.15pm. The Division 5 team lost to Ramor United in the first round and will play Bailieborough in round 2 Thursday evening August 6 in St. Anne’s Park at 6pm.

Hard luck to the senior team on the narrowest of defeats by 3-13 to 0-21 to Castlerahan after extra time in Kingspan Breffni on Saturday evening. Lavey fought back valiantly to force extra time with the scores locked at 2-10 to 0-16. They led at half time in extra time but ultimately just lost out by the solitary point. Well done to the players and management and all involved in the championship campaign.

Well Done

Congratulations to Aaron McCabe on his goal scoring exploits with Longford Town in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division in the past couple of weeks. He scored the winner against Galway Utd. and then a sensational lob to put his side 2-1 in front against Wexford (with a celebration to match) and followed up with another in injury time to seal a 3-1 win. This has helped the Town to climb to second place in the league table.

Cemetries

Mass for the Faithfully Departed in Upper on Saturday, September 19 at 7pm and Sunday, September 20 at 11am. The Blessings of the Graves ceremony will not be taking place due to Covid-19 restrictions. Fr. Pat Farrelly will bless all graves in private.

The Club was deeply saddened with the untimely death of Alannah Fay, New Inn, aged 16 years, on September 21. Well done to the Cavan senior team and management on the dramatic 2-15 to 1-17 win over Monaghan after extra time in the Ulster championship preliminary round in Clones on Saturday last. Lavey's Gerard Smith and Chris Conroy contributed hugely to the win. Gerard forced the game to extra time with a wonderful long range point. Chris looked to have hit the winning point from a "45" deep in stoppage time until further twists left the winning kick coming from goalkeeper and captain Raymond Galligan from a 55M free. Danny Cusack and Paul Gilcreest are also on the panel. Masses

All public Masses are suspended in the Diocese of Kilmore until further notice. Churches remain open for people to visit and pray. Spiritual communion is encouraged by participation in Mass and other liturgies by radio, tv, webcam, etc.
Anniversary Masses that have been booked for the next three weeks can be rescheduled by phoning the parish office (Thursday or Friday between 10am and 1pm – 049 4330125). If families prefer to go ahead with the date booked, Mass can be said privately on the same weekend.
In order to remember our deceased relatives in November, a remembrance tree will be erected in both churches. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 restrictions this year you will have to pre write your own label at home and then attach to the tree. Masses will be offered privately for your loved ones during the month of November.

ALONE manage a national support line and additional supports for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to the pandemic. GAA

Well done to Gerard Smith and Chris Conroy and the Cavan senior team and management on the 0-13 to 0-9 win over Antrim in the Ulster championship quarter-final in Kingspan Breffni on Saturday last. Danny Cusack and Paul Gilcreest are also on the panel. Attention now turns to the semi-final against Down on Sunday, November 15 in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh at 1.30pm. Good luck to all involved.

Promotion to Premier Division

Congratulations to Aaron McCabe and his Longford Town team mates on winning promotion to the top tier of League of Ireland Football when they defeated Shelbourne 1-0 in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off Final in Richmond Park on Sunday last.

McCabe Society

Congratulations to the Society on an excellent new publication regarding the clans history from arrival in Ireland in the 13th century and now worldwide. This will be an invaluable aid in family research. On sale at Easons.

Ulster Champions!

Congratulations to Gerard Smith and Chris Conroy and the Cavan senior team and management on their amazing win over Donegal in the 2020 Ulster final. Danny Cusack and Paul Gilcreest are also on the panel. Everyone in the parish is extremely proud of these lads! 

Remembrance Mass

The Chaplaincy Department of Cavan General Hospital are holding a remembrance Mass for those who passed away in the hospital during the past year and also for departed relatives and friends of Staff. Usually they invite relatives to join in person but this year Mass must take on a different format. It will be held in the Cathedral of St. Patrick and Felim, Cavan on Monday, November 30 at 10am and you can watch online at Cavan Cathedral and light a candle at that time in remembrance of your loved one.

Cash for Clobber

Killyconnan Parents Association are holding a Cash for Clobber collection from Saturday, November 28 to Tuesday, December 1. Please leave any unwanted clothes (clothing, footwear, shoes, handbags, bed linen, towels and curtains, No pillows or duvets) in the Poly Tunnel beside the Astro Pitch at Lower Lavey. Please support.

Death

Sympathy is extended to Ailish Cornyn on the death of her mother Margaret (Margie) Cornyn, Dowra whose funeral took place on Friday, November 20.

GAA

Well done to Gerard Smith and Chris Conroy and the Cavan senior team and management on the tremendous victory over defending champions Donegal by 1-13 to 0-12 in the Ulster championship final in the Athletic Grounds, Armagh on Sunday last. In doing so they produced a wonderful performance of skill mixed with endeavour to upset the favourites and claim the Anglo Celt Cup for the first time since 1997. Congratulations also to Danny Cusack and Paul Gilcreest who are on the panel. They will play defending champions Dublin in the All Ireland semi-final on Saturday, December 5 in Croke Park at 5.30pm.

Cavan play defending champions Dublin in the All Ireland semi-final on Saturday, December 5 in Croke Park at 5.30pm. It is sad that there can't be spectators on this occasion so there won't be a repeat of 1997 when Cavan fans attended the semi-final in massive numbers. Best of luck to the Management and panel which includes Lavey's Chris Conroy, Gerard Smith, Paul Gilcreest and Danny Cusack.

Masses

With the easing of the Covid restrictions to level 3, Masses have resumed in both Upper and Lower with a cap on attendances at 50 people.

The weekend Masses are as follows:

  • Lower - Saturdays at 8.30pm and Sundays at 10am;
  • Upper - Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 11am.
Christmas Gift to Zambia

A collection will take place next weekend, Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13 in Upper for St. Mary Courtney. This is to help Sr. Mary provide small Christmas presents for some of the many orphans in Zambia. The collection box will be available in church porches and any donation will be gratefully received.

The Lavey Ladies 8th Annual Christmas Swim will take place on Christmas Day at 12 noon at Lavey Lake. Their nominated charity this year is Pieta House. Bucket collection at the event. All donations, big or small, are appreciated.

Cavan lost to defending champions Dublin by 1-24 to 0-12 in the All Ireland semi-final on Saturday last in Croke Park. They put in a strong performance in the opening half but were overpowered by an excellent second half performance from the champions. Well done to the Management and panel and Lavey's Chris Conroy, Gerard Smith, Paul Gilcreest and Danny Cusack on a great championship which yielded a first Ulster senior title since 1997.

The death of Patrick (Packie) Carolan , Knocknagilla occurred on December 12 at the Lisdarn Unit for the Elderly. The funeral took place to St. Dympna's Church, Upper Lavey on Monday last. Sympathy is extended to his cousins and extended family.

Death

The death of Peter Nulty, Druminduff occurred on December 14 at Cavan General Hospital. The funeral took place to St. Dympna's Church, Upper Lavey on Wednesday, December 16. Sympathy is extended to his sons Thomas, Eddie, and Kieran; daughters Mairead and Rosemary; daughters in law; sons in law, grandchildren and extended family.

Adoration

There will be no adoration in St. Dympna's Church, Upper for the next two weeks. It will resume on Thursday, January 7.
